Should I take Evening Primrose Oil on its own or alongside omega-3? Will it affect my omega-3:6 balance?Updated a day ago

Efamol Evening Primrose Oil can be taken on its own or alongside an omega-3 supplement. Whether you need both depends largely on your diet and individual nutritional needs.

What's the difference between omega-3 and omega-6?

Both are important types of fatty acids, but they play different roles in the body.

  • Evening Primrose Oil is a natural source of Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid involved in the body's normal fatty acid metabolism and cell signalling processes.

  • Omega-3 supplements typically provide EPA and DHA, fatty acids found naturally in oily fish. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and vision.*

GLA is different from linoleic acid (LA), the more common omega-6 fatty acid found in many vegetable oils. By providing GLA directly, Evening Primrose Oil bypasses the body's need to convert LA into GLA.

Do I need to worry about my omega-3:6 ratio?

You may have read that it's important to maintain a particular balance between omega-3 and omega-6.

However, there isn't one universally agreed ideal ratio. Rather than focusing on a specific number, it's generally more helpful to ensure you're getting enough omega-3 fatty acids in your diet.

Should I take an omega-3 supplement as well?

If you regularly eat oily fish, such as salmon, sardines or mackerel, you may already be getting a good amount of omega-3.

The NHS recommends eating at least two portions of fish per week, including one portion of oily fish.

If you rarely eat oily fish, you may wish to consider an omega-3 supplement alongside your Evening Primrose Oil.

Can I take both Efamol supplements together?

Yes, Efamol Evening Primrose Oil can generally be taken alongside a fish oil supplement. Always follow the recommended daily dosages and check for any overlapping ingredients.

If you're taking medication, have an existing medical condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend speaking to your healthcare professional before combining supplements.

The beneficial effect of DHA on normal brain function and vision is obtained with a daily intake of 250mg DHA.
